Perry was born to Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). The role of Jackie Harris was played by her mother in both the two shows she starred in on Roseanne. Her parents did not allow her to begin acting with her parents till she reached adulthood, as they feared the strain it might create. Perry admitted that she wasn't at ease in the stage during high school. She began doing it to make friends during her time at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. After graduating Perry relocated to New York to search for jobs on television, landing small parts in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent however, her homesickness led Perry back home to California which is where she discovered theater work. In 2013, she appeared in The Other Place on Broadway alongside her mother. In the year 2015, she was alongside Kevin McKidd alongside her mother in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer-winning drama Anna Christie. The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble is located in West Los Angeles. In the year 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes of ABC's crime thriller The Family. Her father played her on the ABC drama Scandal. The same year, she appeared as a younger character based on Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory) in which she played her mother as a young version. The actress was chosen for the role despite having a close relationship with the character's family.
